What is Trasely?
Trasely is an iOS app that turns any shape into a real GPS route you can run, walk, or cycle. Instead of planning a route manually on a map, you start from a visual idea — a photo silhouette, a built-in shape, or a freehand sketch — and Trasely maps it onto real streets near you.
Under the hood, an on-device AI pipeline extracts the outline of your chosen shape, and a routing algorithm finds the closest real-world match on the street network. The result is a navigable GPS route you can export to virtually any fitness platform or device.
Requirements
- iOS 17.0 or later — required for the on-device Vision Framework (
VNGenerateForegroundInstanceMaskRequest). - iPhone or iPad — compatible with any device running iOS/iPadOS 17+.
- Internet connection — needed during route generation. Route viewing, editing, and the library work fully offline.
- Location permission — optional. Only requested when using "current location" as a starting point.
- Photos permission — only requested when importing a photo from your library (Photo to Route mode).
Your first route
The fastest way to create your first route:
- Open Trasely and tap Create.
- Tap Shape Library and pick a shape — a heart or star is a great start.
- The Contour Editor opens with the shape pre-loaded. You can simplify or smooth it, or just tap Continue.
- On the Route Setup screen, choose your activity (running, walking, or cycling) and set a target distance.
- Tap Continue to open the Contour Placement map. Drag, pinch, and rotate the shape overlay to position it over your neighborhood.
- Tap Generate Route and wait a few seconds.
- Review the result on the Results screen. Tap Save & Export to keep it.
Best results tip: Dense urban grids (city centers, planned neighborhoods) produce the closest shape matches. If the result doesn't look right, try moving the shape or increasing the scale.
Shape Library
The Shape Library contains 50+ pre-optimized shapes: geometric forms, animals, letters, symbols, and more. Each shape is available in a Simple and Detailed variant. Simple variants produce cleaner, shorter routes; Detailed variants preserve more character but require a longer distance to match well.
After selecting a shape, you can still adjust it in the Contour Editor before routing.
PRO: The full shape library is unlocked with Trasely PRO. Free users can access a curated selection of the most popular shapes.
Photo to Route PRO
Use any photo as a route template. Trasely uses Apple's Vision Framework to isolate the main subject and trace its outline entirely on-device — no image is ever uploaded anywhere.
Steps
- Tap Create → Photo and select an image from your library.
- Crop the image to frame your subject tightly.
- Trasely automatically extracts the contour. Review and refine it in the Contour Editor if needed.
- Continue to Route Setup → Contour Placement → Generation as usual.
Tips for clean contours
- High-contrast images with a clear subject on a simple background work best.
- Simple silhouettes — animals, logos, letters — translate best to street routes.
- Avoid complex scenes with multiple subjects or intricate fine detail.
- A hand-drawn shape on white paper, photographed from directly above, gives excellent results.
Freehand Draw PRO
Draw any shape directly on screen with your finger or Apple Pencil. No photo or library needed — Trasely captures your sketch as a contour and maps it to real streets.
Steps
- Tap Create → Freehand Draw.
- Draw your shape on the canvas. Close the shape by ending near your starting point.
- Tap Done — Trasely converts your sketch into a contour.
- Refine in the Contour Editor if needed, then continue to Route Setup.
Loop Route
Loop Route generates a circular route that starts and ends at the same point — ideal for training runs, where finishing where you started matters.
Options
- Activity — running, walking, or cycling, each with its own routing profile.
- Distance — set your target loop distance.
- Starting point — your current location or any point on the map.
- POI Waypoints — enable to route through nearby parks, cultural spots, cafés, or fitness facilities. Trasely uses MapKit to find nearby POIs and optimizes their order automatically.
Point-to-Point
Point-to-Point plans a route between any two locations. Tap a start and an end point on the map — Trasely builds the best path between them.
Unlike Loop Route, Point-to-Point routes don't return to the start. They're ideal for one-way exploration runs, city sightseeing routes, or planning a race course between two landmarks.
Distance is determined by the two chosen points, so there is no distance slider in Route Setup for this mode.
Image Overlay PRO
Point-to-Point includes an Image Overlay tool (requires PRO) — tap the Overlay button in the toolbar to place a reference photo on top of the map. You can then trace streets that follow the shape in your image. Drag to reposition, pinch to scale, rotate with two fingers, and adjust opacity. Tap Done when finished — the overlay disappears before saving.
Contour Editor
The Contour Editor appears after any shape is loaded — whether from the Shape Library, a photo, or a freehand sketch. It lets you refine the outline before routing.
Controls
- Drag a point — reposition individual vertices of the contour.
- Pinch — zoom in or out on the contour canvas.
- Simplify slider — reduces the number of points (Douglas–Peucker algorithm). Increase to remove noise; decrease to preserve detail. Fewer points generally means a cleaner route match.
- Smooth toggle — applies Chaikin curve smoothing for rounder, more organic-looking shapes.
Note: Simpler contours with fewer sharp corners tend to match the street network more faithfully. If your route looks jagged, try increasing simplification in the Contour Editor.
Contour Placement & Scaling
Before generating a route, you position and size the shape on the map using the Contour Placement screen. The shape is overlaid on the map as a transparent outline.
Gestures
- Drag — move the shape to any location on the map.
- Pinch — scale the shape up or down. Larger = longer route distance.
- Two-finger rotate — rotate the shape. Orientation matters — sometimes rotating 45° dramatically improves the street match.
- Mirror — flip the shape horizontally using the toolbar button.
The overlay shows an approximate bounding box with the estimated route distance, so you can gauge the size before generating.
Route Editor
After a route is generated, the Route Editor lets you manually adjust individual waypoints. Drag any waypoint to a new position — it snaps to the nearest routable road in real time.
Tap the Undo button (or shake your device) to revert the last change. The full undo history is preserved for the duration of your editing session.
Route Options
The Route Setup screen appears before every route generation. It controls your activity profile, distance target, and detailed routing preferences.
Activity
Choose Running, Walking, or Cycling. Each uses a different routing profile: running/walking prioritizes footpaths and pedestrian zones; cycling prefers bike lanes and cycling paths.
Target Distance
Not available in Point-to-Point mode (distance is set by your two chosen points). For all other modes:
- Presets — tap chips like 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon, 50K, 100K (running); equivalent presets for walking and cycling. Longer presets require PRO.
- Stepper — increment or decrement by 1 km/mile.
- Slider — drag freely within the allowed range. The PRO portion of the range is highlighted; sliding into it snaps back unless you have PRO.
- Custom (PRO) — tap Edit to type in any exact value.
For contour-based routes, a Shape Tolerance stepper (5%–30%) controls how strictly the route must hit the target distance. A higher tolerance gives the algorithm more freedom and often improves the shape match.
Routing Options
These toggles apply to all activity profiles:
- Prefer Parks — biases routing toward park paths and green spaces.
- Avoid Highways — excludes main roads and motorways. Recommended for all on-foot activities.
- Avoid Ferries — prevents routes that require a ferry crossing.
Additional options for Running & Walking:
- Avoid Stairs — routes around staircases where an alternative exists.
- Prefer Flat Terrain — biases the route toward level ground. Useful for recovery runs or accessible walking routes.
- Prefer Lit Paths — favors paths with street lighting. Ideal for early-morning or after-dark runs.
Additional options for Cycling:
- Bicycle Type — Road, Hybrid, City, or Mountain. Affects which surfaces and paths the engine considers suitable.
- Avoid Hills — biases the route toward flatter terrain.
POI Waypoints (Loop Route only)
Enable to route through nearby points of interest. Choose from category groups — Parks & Nature, Culture & Landmarks, Food & Drink, Fitness & Sport. The routing engine determines the optimal visit order automatically.
Export Formats: GPX & TCX
From any Route Detail screen, tap Export to save your route as a file. Trasely supports two formats:
- GPX 1.1 — the universal GPS standard. Accepted by virtually every fitness platform, app, and device worldwide.
- TCX (Training Center XML) — a Garmin standard that includes structured workout data. Preferred by Garmin devices and platforms like TrainingPeaks. Requires Trasely PRO.
Both formats contain a sequence of GPS waypoints that define the route. They are plain XML files — you can open them in any text editor and they will work on any GPS device that accepts course files.
Exporting to Strava
- In Trasely, open Route Detail → Export → GPX.
- In the iOS share sheet, tap Save to Files and choose a location (e.g. iCloud Drive or On My iPhone).
